And now one of the worst communication ideas ever, in the realm of cell phones on an airplane: Social media between drivers on the road. Let drivers text pissy messages to each other while driving.
"Thrower's startup is hoping drivers will want to join the new mobile social network, which is tied to car license plate numbers, so they can send those driver-to-driver messages." With advertising thrown in, oh what joy. "What Groupon did for coupons, Bump.com is going to do for real time, real world unique identifier messaging and marketing[.]"
Very civil, super safe. Go Bump Network!

there are other reasons to connect with drivers besides sending pissy messages. i think it sounds kinda cool.
there are pros and cons to all new technology. i remember freaking out about the possibilities of facebook when i first found out about it in my dorm september '04. i like this idea... and good thing bump disables texting over 5mph. i heard they use their license reading technology to catch kidnappers and other criminals.
I was being somewhat flippant in my past; there's always good & bad with all technology. as you said. But I do think that most people will not use car to car texting for civilized messages. How often do you think kind thoughts about the people driving around you? ;)
Take a look at this cool video by BUMP.com:
